Anniversary

An anniversary gift you can send in a message

The years get harder to buy for, not easier. Here is what works at each stage, and how to make something that is about the two of you rather than about shopping.

  • Works for a month or a decade
  • Your photographs and your words
  • Ready the same evening
  • One link, nothing to post

Start with the number

An anniversary gift that mentions the number is already better than one that does not. Not as a novelty, as proof you were counting.

The first month. Low stakes. A photograph printed, a note, one song. Anything heavy here reads as nervous.

The first year. The first one where you have enough history to show. Photographs from the year, in order, is almost always the right answer.

Three to five years. The ordinary days are the material now. The flat you hated. The hospital waiting room. The holiday that went wrong and became the story you both tell.

Ten and beyond. Nobody needs another object. What people want at ten years is evidence that the other one noticed.

Ideas that are not a voucher

The year in photographs, with captions. Twelve pictures, one line under each. The line is the gift.

A letter that is not a card. Cards have four lines of someone else's writing. Write six paragraphs of yours.

The count, written down. How many days you have been together. Most people have never once seen that number.

A page that holds all three. The count, the letter and the photographs, behind a passcode, as one link you send.

What makes it personal, specifically

Vague is the enemy. These three things do more than anything else:

  • A date. Not "a few years ago". The date.
  • A thing they said. Repeated back, in their words.
  • A photograph nobody has seen. The bad one. The one where neither of you is ready.

Everything else is decoration on top of those.

What to write

Open with when it started, with the date in it. One paragraph on the year just gone, and be specific about a hard part, because a letter that only mentions the good bits reads like a reference. One paragraph on what you noticed about them this year that you had not before. Close with what you are looking forward to, small and concrete rather than grand.

That is six short paragraphs. It takes about twenty minutes, and it will be read more than once.

Build the whole thing and look at it before you pay.

FAQ

What is a good digital anniversary gift?

One made from things only you have: your photographs, your dates, your own words. A page or a letter beats a bought object at every stage after the first year.

How many photographs should I use?

Fewer than you want to. Ten with a line under each lands harder than fifty in a grid, because every one of the ten had a reason.

What if I am not good at writing?

Write what happened instead of what you feel. 'You drove four hours in the rain to get me' does the work that 'you mean everything to me' cannot.

Can I send it on the day, late at night?

Yes. It is a link, so there is no delivery to arrange. Many people set the passcode to the anniversary date and send it just before midnight.
