A Tamil wedding invitation — the kalyana pathirikai — follows a structure that families recognise instantly: an invocation, the elders who invite, the couple, the muhurtham with its exact window, and the venue. Get the order right and even a modern animated invitation feels correct to the grandparents. Get it wrong and someone will notice.

Below are the building blocks in Tamil with English equivalents, then complete samples for the muhurtham, reception and nichayathartham, and notes on what changes for different communities.

The traditional structure

  1. Invocation — a line to the family deity or a simple ஸ்ரீ / at the top. Common: ஸ்ரீ கணேசாய நமஹ or திருச்சிற்றம்பலம் for Saivite families.
  2. The inviting elders — parents (and often grandparents) request the pleasure of your company.
  3. The couple — bride and groom, with Chi. (சி.) before the groom's name and Sow. (செள.) before the bride's — short for Chiranjeevi and Sowbhagyavathi.
  4. The muhurtham — day, date and the auspicious window, e.g. காலை 7:30 – 9:00 மணிக்குள்.
  5. Venue with full address, and increasingly a map link.
  6. Closingதங்கள் வருகையை எதிர்பார்க்கும் ("awaiting your arrival") followed by the family names.

Community notes

  • Tamil Brahmin (Iyer / Iyengar): the invitation often lists the sampradaya and includes the Kasi Yatra and Oonjal timings on a separate line; the muhurtham window is given precisely. Consider a second event card for the Nichayathartham the previous evening.
  • Chettiar / Nagarathar: family and kovil (temple) names carry weight — many invitations name the pirivu and ancestral village. Put these on the message line under the parents' names.
  • Tamil Christian: replace the invocation with a verse (Ruth 1:16 and 1 Corinthians 13 are common), use Mr. & Mrs. rather than Chi./Sow., and list the church service and the reception separately.
  • Muslim (Tamil-speaking): Bismillah at the top, Nikah and Valima as the two events, with the Walima often the larger gathering for extended family.

Putting it on an animated invitation

On ShareMyInvite the structure above maps directly onto the form: parents' names become Son of / Daughter of, the muhurtham window goes into the Auspicious time field (it shows as a gold pill under the date), and each ceremony is its own event card with directions and a calendar button. Names typed in Tamil script render in a matching Tamil serif — no font installs, no images of text.

FAQ

Should the bride's or the groom's family be listed first?

Traditionally the family hosting the wedding — usually the bride's — lists first, but many families now print two versions. On an animated invitation there is a single switch, *Show the bride's name first*, that flips the order everywhere.

How do I write the muhurtham window?

Give the day, date and the window, e.g. *காலை 6:30 – 7:30 மணிக்குள்* ("between 6:30 and 7:30 AM"). Elders plan their arrival around it, so avoid a single time when the priest has given a window.

Can the invitation be in Tamil and English at the same time?

Yes. Keep the family message in Tamil, the event titles bilingual ("Wedding Muhurtham · திருமண முகூர்த்தம்") and the practical details — address, map, timings — in English so every guest can act on them.

Is "Chi." and "Sow." still used?

In printed and formal invitations, yes. Couples sending their own WhatsApp message usually drop the honorifics and keep them for the parents' formal card — both are fine.
